Nobody asked for a phone without a physical keyboard.<\/p>

Nobody asked for a tiny computer you could wear on your wrist.<\/p>

Nobody was sitting around saying, \u201cYou know what my coffee experience needs? A subscription.\u201d<\/p>

And yet, some of the products and campaigns we now consider obvious started with something that didn’t exist in the first place:<\/p>

People weren’t asking for them.<\/strong><\/p>

That’s because there is a difference between giving people what they want<\/strong> and showing them something they didn’t know they wanted.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

If nobody asked for it, why make it?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Marketing has become increasingly obsessed with listening to consumers.<\/p>

Search data. Social listening. Reviews. Surveys. Focus groups. Comments.<\/p>

There is a lot we can learn from what people are already saying.<\/p>

But there’s a catch.<\/p>

If we only build based on what people explicitly ask for, we might end up making better versions of things that already exist.<\/p>

People can tell you what they want improved.<\/p>

But they aren’t always able to imagine what doesn’t exist yet.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The iPhone didn't answer the demand. It changed the expectation<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Before the iPhone, smartphones existed.<\/p>

Touchscreens existed.<\/p>

MP3 players existed.<\/p>

Mobile internet existed.<\/p>

What Apple did was bring these behaviours together into one experience and make it feel inevitable.<\/p>

That is an important distinction.<\/p>

Innovation isn’t always about creating something nobody has ever seen.<\/p>

Sometimes it’s about taking things people already know and combining them in a way they didn’t think to ask for.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Nobody asked for a yearly personality report either<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

While you listen to music, you never truly thought of Spotify Wrapped<\/strong>.<\/p>

People already knew their listening history existed somewhere inside Spotify.<\/p>

But nobody was asking if Spotify can turn their music data into a colourful annual personality sharable report?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>

Yet Spotify did it anyway, and suddenly, listening history became social currency.<\/p>

Your top artist became a conversation starter.<\/p>

Your most-played song became a personality trait.<\/p>

Your music taste became something you could share, compare and debate.<\/p>

Spotify didn’t just give users data.<\/p>

It gave them a reason to care about their own data.<\/strong><\/p>

And more importantly, it gave them something they wanted to share before they knew they wanted it.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Sometimes, the idea is even less obvious<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Think about Dove’s Real Beauty<\/strong> campaign.<\/p>

People weren’t necessarily asking a soap brand to challenge the beauty industry’s definition of attractiveness.<\/p>

They weren’t searching for another beauty campaign featuring ordinary women.<\/p>

Dove saw a cultural tension instead.<\/p>

Advertising had spent decades presenting an increasingly narrow version of beauty. So Dove chose to move in the opposite direction.<\/p>

The campaign wasn’t built around a functional product request. It was built around a human truth<\/strong>.<\/p>

And that is where some of the strongest marketing ideas begin.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t

There's a fine line between \u201cunexpected\u201d and \u201cunnecessary\u201d<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Of course, not every unasked-for idea is automatically a good idea. That’s where marketers can get carried away.<\/p>

Being unexpected isn’t enough. Being different isn’t enough. And \u201cNobody asked for this\u201d isn’t a strategy.<\/p>

The idea still needs a reason to exist.<\/p>

The best unexpected ideas usually have one of three things behind them:<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

1. They solve problems people haven’t articulated.<\/strong><\/h3>

People didn’t necessarily ask for wireless earbuds. But they did want a more seamless way to listen.<\/p>

2. They create a behaviour people didn’t know they would enjoy.<\/strong><\/h3>

Nobody asked Spotify to gamify their listening history. But once Wrapped existed, people wanted to see theirs.<\/p>

3. They tap into a feeling people already had but hadn’t seen reflected.<\/strong><\/h3>

Dove didn’t invent the insecurity around beauty standards. It gave that feeling a voice.<\/p>

That’s the sweet spot.<\/p>

Don’t invent a need. Discover an unspoken one.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t

The best question isn't \u201cWhat do people want?\u201d<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Maybe it’s: \u201cWhat would people love if we showed it to them?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>

That’s a much harder question.<\/p>

It requires curiosity.<\/p>

It requires observation.<\/p>

It requires taking a few risks.<\/p>

And sometimes, it requires being willing to hear:<\/p>

\u201cBut who asked for this?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>
